Cornish Tin Mining – The Power Behind the Industrial Revolution
‘Cast in pewter, this art-medal celebrates the legacy that tin mining has left on the Cornish landscape – the derelict chimneys and engine houses that tell the story of the men working under the seabed, blasting and digging out the tin ore that helped power the industrial revolution. On the front we see the derelict engine house and chimney of an old tin mine, perched on the cliff above the sea. The reverse shows the location of this and the other ancient Cornish tin mines. All of this is enclosed within the bricks of a chimney – the most visible feature on the landscape. Those once redundant mines may yet be revived to power the next energy revolution of lithium batteries and floating offshore wind.’
